United Airlines to operate in Funchal from June 2025
From June 2025, the US airline United Airlines will start operating in Madeira. The Funchal/Newark flight will have three weekly frequencies and will connect the region to 89 airports in the USA, Canada and Mexico, on flights operated by United or partners. United's service from Madeira to New York/Newark will be operated with a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft with 16 Premium PlusSM seats, 54 Economy PlusSM seats and 96 Economy seats.
For example, travel prices in June can vary between 888 and 6,205 euros (round trip), depending on the fare chosen.
“We are excited to announce our first-ever nonstop service between Madeira and New York/Newark, further expanding our route network from Portugal to the US,” said Marcel Fuchs, General Manager, International Sales, United Airlines, quoted in a press release.
“For the summer of 2025, our customers in Portugal will benefit from an even greater choice of travel, with the opportunity for direct service connecting Madeira to the United States, as well as the possibility of enjoying convenient connections via our New York/Newark hub to 57 destinations across America,” he added.
In addition to the new flights, customers will have even more time to explore Venice, Italy; Athens, Greece; and Barcelona, Spain, with earlier start dates next summer. The airline will also increase the number of weekly nonstop flights between Newark/New York-Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Newark/New York-Dubrovnik, Croatia, and Newark/New York-Athens, Greece.
United is also adding new direct flights from Tokyo-Narita to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Kaohsiung - destinations that no other US airline serves - and a new direct flight to Koror, Palau. These new flights will seamlessly connect Tokyo to United's transpacific services to five hub locations in the continental United States.
United flies to more international destinations than any other US airline. In total, next summer United will offer 800 daily flights to and from 147 international destinations - including 40 that no other US airline serves. All new flights are subject to government approval and will be available for sale on United's website and app.
“No other airline offers customers direct access to as many unique international destinations and experiences from the U.S. as United,” said Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. “Our network offers the greatest choice and variety for our customers, whether they're looking for a relaxing seaside getaway, a once-in-a-lifetime adventure trip or to explore some of the world's most vibrant urban hideaways.”
Many of the new flights will be available for sale on United.com and the United app in the coming weeks.

Weather in Madeira? A real lottery!
Madeira is a small pebble lost in the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. There are no fewer than 30 microclimates around the island. As the old-timers like to say, “In Madeira, you can see all 4 seasons in one day!
Right in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, the gulf stream has a major influence on the climate. We're also just north of the Tropic of Cancer, which has a major influence on the winds, more specifically the trade winds. Its geographical position, cartography and location mean that the weather remains relatively unpredictable. On the same day, it can rain in Funchal, be sunny in the north, and vice versa.
Add to this the fact that in less than 45 minutes, you can go from sea level 0 to 1,800 meters above sea level, which has a direct influence on temperatures and conditions.
What we know about Madeira's weather and climate
Madeira's climate is considered subtropical. A subtropical climate could be defined as an average annual temperature between 16 and 24°C, with at least 8 months above 10 degrees. This climate is halfway between continental and tropical. Overall, this means that it's exceptionally mild for 8 months out of 12! That's why it's nicknamed “Eternal spring Island”.
Microclimates
A large part of the south of the island, as well as the extreme east (São Lourenço point), are areas of low rainfall: between 600 and 1000 mm per year. The weather in Funchal and in villages such as Ribeira Brava, Calheta and Ponta do Sol is almost year-round.
Conversely, the mountainous regions in the heart of the island are particularly prone to rainfall: between 2,500 and 3,000 mm per year around the "pico do Ariero" in the central east, and Encumeada in the central west. This explains the importance of the levadas, which carry water to the coast and to crops.
The north of the island as a whole also receives more rainfall, between 1,400 and 2,000 mm per year. The average temperature is slightly lower than in the south, except for Ponta Delgada, which also has its own microclimate. The northern regions of the island are greener, lusher and wilder.

The sweetest months in Madeira
The mildest months in Madeira are May - June - July - August - September and October. The weather can also be very mild until December, depending on the year.
April and June are the best months to enjoy nature in full bloom. You can also enjoy some very mild weather in September, when temperatures are more or less the same as in summer, with fewer tourists and sunsets whose light is just crazy (this is my personal favorite month in Madeira).
The months of July and August in particular are a bit special in that most of the locals are on vacation, so you won't see many locals on the island. As for temperature, it's not because it's summer that it's going to be extremely hot. Remember, temperatures very rarely exceed 30°!
What can change and be quite disturbing is the humidity in the air. You need to be careful, as this can cause some discomfort for people who are not used to it or who are sensitive (headaches, for example).
How do I choose my outfits for my trip?
The best way is to plan a mix. As with any destination you visit in spring. So it's a good idea to pack summer-type outfits (shorts, t-shirt, polo shirt, dress, etc.), but also something warm (sweater, hooded sweatshirt, etc.) and windproof or waterproof clothing (at least one).
The best thing to do, especially if you're planning to climb to higher altitudes, is to leave your place of residence in “spring” mode, but take something warm with you. Again, in Madeira, you can go from altitude 0 to 1,800 metres in less than 40 minutes! The pico Arrieiro can be very clear, but much cooler than the seaside. And depending on where the wind comes from, it can be very cold or rather hot. In short, wherever you go, take your woolly jacket with you. It'll never get lost, and will save you from shivering during a photo shoot or a drink with friends!

Why renting a camera for your vacation in Madeira is the best option !
Did you know ? You can rent cameras in Funchal !
Vacations in Madeira are the perfect opportunity to capture unforgettable memories. Whether you're exploring new horizons, traveling to beautiful places or spending time with family and friends, a camera can be an invaluable companion for capturing these moments. However, it's time to rethink the way you think about vacation photography. Instead of bringing your own equipment, consider renting a camera on location. Here's why it's a smart option:
1. Save on baggage fees:
Airlines often charge high fees for bulky luggage, including electronic equipment such as cameras. By opting to rent a camera on the spot, you'll avoid these unnecessary fees. That means more money in your pocket to spend on activities, souvenirs and culinary delights during your vacation.
2. Avoid the fear of damage to your equipment:
Transporting expensive photographic equipment can be a source of considerable stress. Shocks, jolts and bad weather during the journey can damage your precious camera. Opting for rental eliminates this risk, allowing you to enjoy your vacation without worrying about the safety of your equipment.
3. Access top-of-the-range equipment:
On-site camera rental gives you the opportunity to choose from a variety of state-of-the-art equipment. You can opt for a high-end camera, specialized lens or other accessories to capture professional-quality images. You won't have to make do with the limited equipment you have, and you can explore new styles of photography.
4. Save space in your luggage:
Every traveler knows how difficult it can be to decide what to take on vacation. Cameras and accessories usually take up a lot of space in your luggage. By opting for rental, you free up space for other essential items and reduce the weight of your suitcases, making your trip more convenient and comfortable.
5. Test before you invest:
If you're thinking of buying a new camera, renting is a great way to test out different models before making a major purchase. You can find out what suits your needs best, based on your vacation environment, photography skills and personal preferences.

Madeira Island: 10 highly photogenic spots you cannot miss for incredible pictures
Planning a trip to Madeira?
My top 10 favourite spots to take amazing photos in the island.
Top 1: Areeiro Peak
Pico do Areeiro is one of the 2 highest point in Madeira Island (1817m). It offers great possibilities in terms of photography, especially at sunset and sunrise. If you are an active person, it’s the starting point to one of the nicest walks on the whole island (Pico Arieiro – Pico Ruivo).
#BenTips | From a local
For you to catch amazing photos here, you need to make sure that the clouds are lower than the mountain itself. To do this, you just need to check the live webcam on the web.
By doing this you don’t spend useless energy going there on a cloudy day and seeing… nothing.
Ideal spot for couples photography, family, engagement and wedding photography.

Top 2: Fanal Forest
Fanal is, for me, an iconic place in Madeira. The forest of Fanal is protected by the UNESCO program because some trees here are more than 500 years old. If you want to feel all the magnetism of the island, this is the place you want to be. With clouds or sun, in summer or winter, this place is always worth it. The mood here is somewhat unique. If you are a nature lover, just go.

It’s good to spend a little time in Fanal. The road to find it is so beautiful that you’ll definitely stop a few times. You can enjoy the nature up there by walking for hours in the valley of Fanal. The feeling is amazing and the view up there is something else, the trees are very special!

There is another little garden that you can walk through, completely for free. To find it, you just need to pass the big bridge in Monte and go down, don’t hesitate to walk around and explore. Lose yourself in the green vegetation under the bridge. This little garden is so beautiful.

Holidays in Madeira ? A little tip that might change your vacation
Are you on holidays in Madeira ? Lucky you ! But, even if you plan everything before to come, weather in Madeira is unpredictable.
In order to realise all the activities you expected, here is my little tip to get the best of Madeira, every time. When I’m programming my photo tours with clients (Click here to know more) I always check Madeira’s webcams and adapt my trip and make sure I get the best photos.
In Madeira Island there are webcams scattered throughout the various geographical points. This way you can watch what is the weather on the island live! Since it always have sun somewhere in Madeira, you can adapt your program depending on the place you wanted to visit.
For example, if you plan to go Pico do Arieiro, you better check before and make sure the webcam show a clear sky. You can see on this website how’s the weather look like (LIVE), check also the last 24H time-lapse, and many other options. Fantastic, isn’t it?
You have 2 ways of checking live webcams :
- One website is netmadeira.com (see photo) : ACCESS HERE
- The other, is on YouTube. It’s a channel called Madeira Web and propose a list of lives too : ACCESS HERE
